Jay not feeling spry after 1st try

-

PORT ST. LUCIE — Playing first base has already taken its toll on Jay Bruce, apparently. The outfielder was a late scratch to Sunday’s lineup with a tight right hip, which he thinks is related to doing work at first base. “Honestly, I think it has to do with taking ground balls at first base, being in a different position, having your hips so engaged, the hip flexor just flared up a little bit,” Bruce said. “It was fine, think you saw me moving around (during morning drills). It’s not anything alarming for sure, just one of those ‘nip it in the bud,’ situations.”

Terry Collins was on the field with Bruce when he said his hip felt tight and the Mets manager immediately sent him to the trainers and took him out of the lineup.

“It’s just one of those things I am going to be cautious about,” Bruce said. Collins expects Bruce back Wednesday and to play six out of the final eight games.

SALAS READY TO WORK

Fernando Salas was back at the Mets complex Sunday and ready to get to work, finally. After an issue getting his work visa, and a trip back to Mexico for the World Baseball Classic, Salas has pitched in a total of two games – both for Mexico in the WBC – this spring.

Collins said he expects to use Salas in Monday’s game against the Tigers and probably every other day from here on out.

NIMMO HAMMY SETBACK

Brandon Nimmo, who tweaked his pulled right hamstring on Friday, is not expected to be available for games until later this week, Collins said.
