FAMILY AFFAIR

Walker struck out four times in four at-bats Saturday night. Reyes has one hit in 19 at-bats this season.

“We’re just collectively not swinging it probably as well as we know we can,” Walker said. “These last two days obviously haven’t been great days for a lot of us. But you just keep pushing forward. And once we get the ball rolling, we know we’ll start clicking on all cylinders.”

Cespedes’ .167 average isn’t indicative of his contact thus far in 2017. He hit his first home run in the eighth inning Friday night and crushed another long fly ball in the eighth Saturday night. But in the chilly temperatures, the ball didn’t carry, and Marlins center fielder Christian Yelich made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Cespedes of an extra-base hit.

“This team’s built on power, and certainly Ces ought to have five or six home runs by now. Certainly the elements are playing havoc with him,” Collins said. “But we’ve got to get some other guys going, because we’re a better offensive team than this. You’re not going to ride one guy. That’s not how we’re built. We’re built to do a lot of things, and certainly we’re not swinging the bats like we can.” Righthander Paul Sewald made his MLB debut in the eighth inning Saturday night in front of his parents and fiancée, who flew to New York from Las Vegas for the game.

The outing was forgettable. Sewald surrendered three straight singles and an RBI safety-squeeze bunt before departing after just 1/3 of an inning. But he was glowing in the postgame locker room nonetheless.

“Obviously results-wise, pitching-wise, it wasn’t what we were hoping for,” Sewald said. “But at the end of the day, I got to pitch in the major leagues. And that’s been a goal of mine since as long as I can remember. …I’m very fortunate that (my family) could just drop everything and get on the first flight all the way across the country.”
