PITCH STARTS

Brushback sparks Mets,

- BY KRISTIE ACKERT

PHILADELPHIA — It was an unforgettable bat flip. Last September, Asdrubal Cabrera crushed a three-run, walkoff homer in the bottom of the 11th inning off reliever Edubray Ramos to beat the Phillies. Cabrera tossed the bat with both hands to celebrate that walkoff win.

Monday night, that bat flip came back to haunt the Phillies and maybe revitalize a sluggish Mets offense.

Seemingly holding a bit of a grudge, Ramos threw a 96-mph fastball behind Cabrera’s head in the eighth inning of a tie game Monday. The veteran shortstop immediately started screaming at Ramos and the rest of the Mets seemed fired up by the drama.

Ramos walked Cabrera, setting up Jay Bruce’s second home run of the night, a two-run game-winning shot in the Mets 4-3 win over the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

Bruce did not flip the bat, but he deserved to after carrying the Mets (4-3) Monday night.

He hit his first home run off righthander Jerad Eickhoff in the fourth inning and scored the tying run in the seventh after drawing a walk and scoring on Neil Walker’s sacrifice fly.

Bruce’s second of the night, off lefty Joely Rodriguez was a dramatic punctuation mark for the Mets, who were seemingly thrown back into a heated rivalry.

“It just gets the competitive juices flowing. We’re trying to play baseball and win baseball games, not be worried about stuff
