Blaz fearless in battle for ‘Girl’

MAYOR DE BLASIO says the city’s got “Fearless Girl’s” back in her fight against the “Charging Bull” — and the bull’s sculptor who is seeking to evict the plucky girl.

“I think this is absolutely a mistake by this sculptor and we will fight him legally,” de Blasio told WNYC’s Brian Lehrer during his weekly radio appearance Friday.

“We think what’s been done here is absolutely legally appropriate on the city’s part. We’re going to defend ‘Fearless Girl’ and her right to be there.”

The bull’s sculptor, Arturo Di Modica, says the statue of the girl violates his rights — and turned his artwork into something negative and infringing on his work in the name of advertising for State Street, the financial services firm that commissioned the “Fearless Girl” as an International Women’s Day installation.

His lawyer, ex-New York Civil Liberties Union director Norman Siegel, fired off a letter to de Blasio earlier this week seeking the statue’s removal.

Di Modica argues the bull represents American optimism and success, but becomes a more sinister figure when the girl, standing proudly with her hands on her hips, is staring it down.

But de Blasio said Di Modica should recognize that “times change” and that his statue is an ode to “unfettered capitalism.”

“You could say it’s about the spirit of optimism, sure, that’s what the artist was thinking, that’s great,” de Blasio said.

“But it is a symbol of Wall Street, and Wall Street, to say the least, is a double-edged sword.”

While the statue has had its critics — those who see it as a corporate form of feminism or as infantilizing for featuring a girl rather than a woman — it’s also resonated with hundreds of locals and tourists who have flocked to it for photos and urged the mayor to make it permanent.
