I don’t hate the Lord, says church burglar

watch, will spend the Easter weekend behind bars.

He acknowledged snapping under pressure from a barrage of religious questions, but insisted even those remarks were not serious.

Woznik explained that he decided to steal from the churches, including one that he hit three times, because he “didn’t want to harm people.”

He was afraid of scaring innocent residents, particularly children, if he started breaking into houses.

So between March 20 and and Monday, Woznik instead broke into the Bangladesh Hindu Mandir Temple in Elmhurst, St. James Episcopal Church in Flushing, Blessed Virgin Mary Help of Christians Church in Woodside and St. Mary Romanian Orthodox Church in Elmhurst.

He was captured on security video at the two of the crime scenes, according to police.

Woznik is a former parishioner at the Elevation Church, a Southern Baptist congregation in Matthews, N.C., near Charlotte. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of hate crime charges in the multi-faith filching.

Woznik was accused of stealing from St. James on three occasions, making off with $1,800 in church funds intended for its senior citizen ministries.

He also clipped a camera and some blank checks from the church, along with money from donation boxes and a gold-plated communion plate from the other churches.

The native of Puerto Rico is the married father of a 17-month-old daughter, Paris. His in-laws refuse to allow Woznik to visit his child in their home where his wife also lives, he claimed.

Woznik instead wound up sleeping on the E and R trains and digging through trash cans for recyclable cans to make money.

He recalled how his mother, who battled a drug problem, suffered a fatal heart attack and died on his fifth birthday. He never knew his father — who was just 15 when Woznik was born — and has no siblings or cousins.

His modest goals now are to get out of jail alive, “see the sunlight again” — and hold his daughter, Woznik said.
