Ferry good idea — if done now

-

Staten Island: I was thrilled when I read in the Daily News that Staten Island Ferry riders will finally get some relief from the cattle-like entry onto the ferry at Whitehall Terminal each evening, via the long-overdue resumption of lower-level boarding (“De Blasio touts improvements to Staten Island Ferry boarding,” April 12). But I was dismayed and baffled that it won’t begin until September. Summer is the absolute worst time on the ferry for the beleaguered ferry commuter, as tourists overrun the terminal, and the boat itself. I think every travel agent in the world says, “Take the Staten Island ferry, it’s free!” And then when we get to the other side, we walk into a construction zone that goes on for blocks. Give us a break please, and start lower-level boarding now.

Trump bad for business

Manhattan: I have been running social networking events for the last 12 years through my business, newyorksocialnetwork.com. For the past 10 years I have been using the World Bar located on the ground floor of the Trump World Tower on First Ave. and E. 48th St. as one of our venues. Since the election, people are boycotting the bar because it is in the Trump building. I have had customers question why I continue to host events there, as well as people who come to events and then leave because they do not want to support Trump! Sadly, these people don’t realize that the bar owners have a lease and have to stay. Business has dropped dramatically for the bar as well as for my business. I did not vote for Donald Trump, but I am discouraged on how shortsighted people are, especially when my business is designed to bring people together. I applaud those who see past the sign on the building and take that step closer to squashing the negativity surrounding today’s political environment.

Justice wasn’t served

Bronx: My older sister Maribel Cavero was shot and killed in November by a 17-year-old aiming for someone else, and I think justice does not exist since the criminal was given only 15 years of jail when it is not the first time he tried to kill someone. The killer is an armed drug dealer and has been a delinquent since the age of 13. His lawyer said at the trial that if Donald Trump had deported my sister she would not have been killed. My sister was not in this country illegally. She was a person with a clean record, while that killer was already a delinquent. Unfortunately, there is no security or protection, and we are at all times exposed to the crime of these gangsters. And the authorities do nothing.

Firefighter’s her hero

Bronx: When I was 5 years old, Firefighter Patrick Griffin saved me and my mom from a fire in our apartment. I am 10 years old now and I am not sick anymore from breathing the smoke. I am healthy and living because of him, so I thank you, Mr. Griffin. Oh, and I can play the violin and I can sing, too. Rehanna Roberts

Sick of secondhand smoke

Astoria: I have a problem since I moved into a 12-apartment, rentstabilized building. A tenant smokes at least 20 times a day on the stoop, which is literally right by my first-floor windows. I have to keep my windows shut during the spring and summer. I hate it. I get short of breath and anxiety. I like my apartment but I do not want to be subjected to secondhand smoke.

They’re all liars

Chester, N.J.: U.S. military intelligence tells us that there have been many instances of chlorine gas attacks in the war in Syria, as well as the recent sarin gas attack (confirmed by autopsies conducted in Turkey). We now have Syria lying and saying they have no chemical weapons and that the entire attack was fabricated. The Russians say that the sarin was from rebels who used it to frame the Syrians. Now our Prevaricator-in-Chief, who has lied about everything, is seeing what it is like to deal with bald-faced liars and their alternative facts. Sadly, as dictators, both Assad and Putin have full control of their media and make Trump look like a rank amateur. David J. Melvin

Russia’s a hypocrite

Wallington, N.J.: This preoccupation with Russia’s opinion on world affairs is laughable. Russia has apparently forgotten the millions of innocent people they starved and worked to death in the Soviet forced labor camps in Siberia under Stalin’s rule during WWII, a fact which they never mention. To treat Russia as a world power is a slap in the face to the millions whose lives were permanently shattered by these barbarians.

Trump is, too

Morris Plains, N.J.: Many will justify Trump’s countless flipflops as campaign rhetoric coming up against the harsh realities of being the President of the United States. But on the trail he constantly chastised President Obama for playing golf. Trump said he would be so busy being our President he would not have time for golf. There is no geopolitical strategy behind his playing golf almost every weekend of his presidency. There is only blatant hypocrisy. Rich Japko

How you Trumpies makin’ out?

Brooklyn: All you uneducated goobers who voted for this ignorant, out-of-touch liar for President, please let us all know when you got your coal mining job back, or your factory or manufacturing job. Tell us you are also not concerned how many millions of wasted taxpayer dollars are paying for Trump Tower protection for his wife and son Barron, or his constant transportation and security for golf games at his Florida resort. He is living high on the hog while you, the dumber than dirt peasants, are the hogs.

Accidents could be avoided

Manhattan: Re “Cyclist dies days after hit by truck in East Village” (April 13): I saw the aftermath of this accident, as I bike through this intersection every day. I did not immediately blame the driver, as it could have been the biker’s fault for running a red or a true accident. But after reading what occurred, this needless death should be yet another wakeup call to our “Vision Zero” elected officials. Cyclists should be able to ride in a bike lane legally through green lights without having to worry about a truck making a wildly illegal turn and running them over. I call on the mayor and DOT to install delayed turn lights on avenues with bike lanes (First and Second Aves.) like we have on Eighth Ave., where traffic patterns allow bikes to pass through a green while drivers are held back with red signals. We already have the left-turn lanes separated from the driving lanes on these avenues, so it’s only a matter of installing some new bike and left-turn lights. Sam Moskowitz

System is broken

Bayside: I have been a teacher at John Bowne High School since 1997 (I now only go in to substitute) and the change in the school is drastic. I blame the negative change on a broken system. A system that displaces students from their local high school rather than facing the issues at hand. A system that treats students like they are disposable. The problem is not the teachers, the problem is not the administration, the problem is a system that allows students to do what they want and then ties the hands of those that can do something about it. The problem is a system that treats education like a business. A system that focuses on numbers rather than realizing that we are dealing with teenagers. Our system is broken and we insist on blaming the adults running the buildings. These adults are simply puppets that must do what the system wants them to do, in order to keep their jobs and reputation.

Sanders stiffed on credit

Nevada City, Calif.: Re “Hillary Clinton joins Gov. Cuomo at ceremonial bill signing of N.Y.’s new free tuition program” (April 12): Bernie Sanders should get most of the credit for this bill. Hillary is old news and is a hasbeen. Please follow Bernie more. He’s had the same message for 40-plus years. We need Bernie’s vision. David J. Freeman

Happy News reader

GETTY Jersey City: I just wanted to thank the Daily News for the tickets to the April 12 game at Yankee Stadium. Your sweepstakes are great. I have been reading the Daily News for over 50 years. You have made a chemo patient’s day a very happy one. Donna Tuzzo
