Expel the Queens Nazi

he Nazi Next Door” said our front page Tuesday, referring to a real live Nazi war criminal, Jakiw Palij, a Holocaust death camp guard living in Queens.

His presence here, after being stripped of his ill-gotten U.S. citizenship and ordered deported more than a dozen years ago, is an affront to justice and to history. Even though Palij is 92, he cannot stay here and must be removed from this country, this bastion of liberty.

We salute the students from the Rambam Mesivta yeshiva in Lawrence, L.I., who protested in front of Palij’s home in Jackson Heights on Monday, which was Holocaust Remembrance Day.

Neighbors who say Palij is a harmless old man don’t understand the crimes he committed as a dangerous young man during the war. He was a guard at the Nazi German Trawniki SS camp in occupied Poland. Trawniki was a boot camp for guards where Jews were killed as part of the training. These are facts the Department of Justice proved before a federal judge, who stripped Palij of his U.S. citizenship in 2004. An immigration judge then ruled the now-stateless, passport-less man deported to Germany, Poland or Ukraine.

But none of those countries would accept him and so the Nazi war criminal remains in Queens.

No more. He must go and not be allowed to die on the soil of the United States.

Germany is ultimately responsible. Germany recruited him. Germany trained him. Germany paid him. Germany supplied his uniform, his gun and his bullets.

Monday, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was honored by the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington with the Elie Wiesel Prize for her contributions to Holocaust education.

Merkel should make a contribution to Holocaust justice and take Palij to either try him for crimes against humanity or let him sit out his days.

President Trump has long talked about deporting people who shouldn’t be here. He should put Palij first on the list — and if Merkel won’t take Palij, dump him in Guantanamo.
