With all due respect to Fox News’ recent scandals, Yahoo correspondent
says that sexual harassment in the newsroom is nothing new.
“Who hasn’t encountered boorish behavior sometime or another?” the veteran newswoman (above) said at Time 100’s Lincoln Center event. “I haven’t experienced it that much, but enough to know that it happens.”
Couric said it was an even bigger problem in the ’70s when she was starting out.
“People didn’t understand it was a new era for women in television news and I think it was kind of a ‘Mad Men’ situation back in the day,” she said.
Couric claims her experiences went beyond being asked to fetch coffee for her male superiors.
“Oh, that’s like child’s play compared to some of the comments made,” she said. “Yeah, of course I was asked to get coffee. That to me is no big whoop. I think when they comment on your breast size, that’s a problem.” When asked if she’s had that happen, Couric said, “Yeah, sure.”
