A ‘preexist’ twist vow in Trumpcare wild U-turn
THE WHITE HOUSE signaled Sunday that a new health care bill proposal was on its way this week and that it would protect people with preexisting medical conditions.
“Preexisting conditions are in the bill. And I mandate it. I said, ‘Has to be,’ ” President Trump told CBS’ “Face the Nation.”
Several of the latest iterations of the Republican proposal to repeal and replace Obamacare have allowed each state to decide whether to force insurers to cover preexisting conditions.
But the latest proposal, which Trump tweeted earlier Sunday was “on its way,” “has evolved over a period of three or four weeks,” he said.
“Now, we really have a good bill,” Trump added. “This bill is much different than it was a while ago.”
The revised version of the House GOP’s American Health Care Act would also allow states to opt out of the requirement for standard premiums, under certain circumstances. Critics have said there is no requirement that a state must provide an affordable coverage option for those consumers.
Last month, House Republicans were forced to cancel a planned vote on the Trump-supported bill to repeal and replace Obamacare because it did not have enough votes to pass, marking an epic collapse of what Trump had said would be his foremost legislative goal.
