Noah to get 2nd opinion
ATLANTA — Noah Syndergaard will head to Los Angeles this week to get a second opinion on his torn right lat muscle, sources confirmed. The righthander was diagnosed by team doctors on Monday.
Syndergaard will see Dr. Neal S. ElAttrache, the renowned orthopedist, at the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles.
While the team will not talk about a timeline for Syndergaard's return, several doctors familiar with that type of injury estimated that the return time would be three to six months.
Steven Matz suffered a torn lat muscle in 2015 and missed two months, though Mets GM Sandy Alderson refused to compare the two injuries.
D’ARNAUD DOWN
The Mets were without catcher Travis d'Arnaud in the starting lineup. D’Arnaud left Tuesday night’s game with a sore right wrist. He initially injured the wrist April 19, hitting it on a bat as he tried to throw out a runner at second base.
Since the injury has nagged d’Arnaud, he had his wrist wrapped before Tuesday night’s game.
D’Arnaud has spent part of the last five seasons on the disabled list.
REED READY
With the middle of the Braves’ lineup coming up in the seventh inning, Terry Collins decided he wanted to go to setup man Addison Reed early. The righthander pitched a scoreless seventh and then stormed off the field and into the tunnel. Later SNY cameras saw Collins talking to an obviously ticked off Reed.
“I threw a stupid slider to Matt Kemp,” Reed said. “I was upset with my outing and I guess I kind of caught some people off guard they didn't know why I was upset. I had no problem with it. If Terry wants me to pitch the second inning, that's fine with me.”
Collins made it clear to Reed there is no change in his status.
“I just wanted him to understand why, I thought it was important, because I thought that was a big part of the game for me,” Collins said. “I told him, I know you are the eighth-inning guy. I told him this was the eighth inning tonight.”
FLORES BACK
Utility infielder Wilmer Flores was rushed to Atlanta from Las Vegas Wednesday morning and activated before the game, because of d’Arnaud's injury. Flores has missed two weeks with a staph infection in his right knee. . . As expected, the Mets named Rafael Montero the starter for Friday’s homestand opener against the Marlins in Syndergaard’s spot. The righthander will be called up from Triple-A for the start, Collins confirmed.
The Mets sent down lefty Sean Gilmartin, their other option to start Friday, to make room for Wilmer Flores.
