Body cam led to conviction

- Thomas Tracy

A QUEENS jury agreed: The camera never lies.

Three armed robbers, including one claiming to be a cop, were convicted of a Queens home invasion after jurors saw damning video evidence collected from an NYPD body camera.

The video captured the arrests of two suspects as they stood with their hands raised on the back roof of a Jamaica home after cops arrived at the scene on June 4, 2015. The 28-minute video also recorded the recovery of firearms at the scene.

Queens District Attorney Richard A. Brown said the case marked the first use of body cam evidence in the borough.

Defendants Aasim McPhee, 25, John Hymes, 49, and Robb Bull, 27, were caught on camera as they tried to flee the crime scene.

McPhee, armed with a handgun, threatened to kill a terrified 9-year-old girl during the failed 12:30 a.m. heist.

The jury deliberated for six hours before returning their verdict Wednesday.

The trio all face up to 25 years in prison after their convictions on charges of burglary, robbery, attempted robbery, weapons possession and endangering the welfare of a trial.

The conviction comes as the NYPD expands its body camera pilot program in response to a court order outlawing the city’s controversial stop-and-frisk program.
