Stanley takes playoff; Kang captures LPGA

-

Kyle Stanley got up-and-down for par from just over the 18th green to win the Quicken Loans National on the first hole of a playoff with Charles Howell III on Sunday. On a chaotic final day at TPC Potomac in Maryland that included a 5-minute delay for a pop-up storm, Stanley and Howell finished at 7-under 273 after matching finalround 4-under 66s.

Howell had a 21-foot putt to win on the final hole of regulation that rolled over the left edge of the cup. In the playoff, both missed the fairway and the green. Howell’s chip came up short and he missed the 11-foot par putt. Stanley chipped to 5 feet and pumped his fist as the putt dropped. It was the second career victory for Stanley, who had struggled following his 2012 win at the Phoenix Open.

l Danielle Kang birdied the final hole for a 3-under 68—271 to win the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, a major, at Olympia Fields, Ill., for her first LPGA Tour title, edging defending champion Brooke Henderson (66—272).

l Kenny Perry claimed his second U.S. Senior Open, pulling away from Kirk Triplett at Salem CC in Peabody, Mass., to shoot a 2-under 68—264 and win by two shots.

LIBS FALL TO DREAM

Sugar Rodgers scored all of her 11 points, including three 3s, in the fourth quarter and the visiting Liberty (7-7) twice trimmed a 20-point deficit to six points in the closing minutes before falling to the Atlanta Dream, 81-72, for their fourth loss in five games. Tina Charles led the Libs, with 21 points.

GERMANY WINS CUP

Germany’s experimental young side overcame street-wise Chile to win a bruising Confederations Cup final, 1-0, in St Petersburg, vindicating Joachim Loew’s decision to leave most of his world champions at home. Lars Stindl scored his third goal of the World Cup warm-up tournament in the 20th minute, tapping into an empty net after a defensive blunder.

HABS EXTEND PRICE

Goalie Carey Price couldn’t imagine wearing anything but a Canadiens uniform, while winger Patrick Marleau agonized about trading in his Sharks jersey for a Maple Leafs one. On Sunday, Price signed an $84 million eight-year extension, Marleau left San Jose after 19 seasons to sign an $18.75 million, three-year deal with Toronto and longtime running mate centeer Joe Thornton re-signed with the Sharks for one year and $8 million. Also, the Capitals continued retooling by signing center Evgeny Kuznetsov for $62.4 million over eight years and trading forward Marcus Johansson to New Jersey for 2018 second- and third-round picks.
