Dolphins ‘considered’ Tebow Hail Mary
THE St. Lucie Mets almost needed a new outfielder.
Prior to agreeing to a deal with former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, the Miami Dolphins “considered” signing Tim Tebow, who is currently playing in left field for the Mets’ Single-A affiliate, according to the Miami Herald.
Tebow, who hasn’t thrown a regular season pass since 2012, was one of several quarterbacks the Dolphins considered before pursuing Cutler, according to The Herald. The Dolphins’ quarterback desperation is a result of starter Ryan Tannehill reinjuring his knee in practice Thursday and potentially needing season-ending surgery.
Cutler retired from the NFL this offseason in order to pursue a broadcasting career with FOX Sports. The one-year, $10 million deal the Dolphins offered was apparently too good to pass up. In addition to Tebow, the Dolphins also considered signing Colin Kaepernick and Kyle Orton, among others. Tebow, Kaepernick and Orton were part of a longer list of quarterbacks the Dolphins contemplated pursuing “before discarding for multiple reasons in favor of Cutler,” The Herald reports.
It’s unclear how serious the Dolphins were in potentially signing Tebow, as The Herald reports some of the players the team considered “were eliminated very quickly.”
Tebow, 29, has a career quarterback rating of 75.3. He completed 47.9 percent of his passes for 17 touchdowns and nine interceptions in his brief three-year career with the Broncos and Jets. Last year Tebow announced he was pursuing a professional baseball career. The former quarterback is currently batting .262 with five home runs and 23 RBI in 38 games with St. Lucie. — Ari Gilberg
FALCONS’ COLLINS BANNED: For the second straight year, Atlanta Falcons cornerback Jalen Collins will be suspended for the start of the season for a violation of the league’s policy on performance enhancers.
This time, the suspension carries a bigger bite: 10 games. The NFL announced Sunday that Collins has been suspended without pay for the first 10 games of the 2017 season. He was suspended for the first four games in 2016. —AP
