Gray’s first Subway ride starts in Bronx

-

Two weeks after the Yankees acquired Sonny Gray from the Athletics at the trade deadline, the right-hander is finally set for his first home start in the Bronx. Gray will pitch in pinstripes for the first time on Tuesday night against the Mets after taking a loss in each of his first two outings with the Yanks, both on the road.

“It’ll be a fun game. I’m excited about it, for sure,” Gray said.

In each of Gray’s first two starts for the Yanks he went six innings, gave up two earned runs, four hits and struck out six. He was charged with three unearned runs over the two starts and received a combined one run of support in the games.

“What I’ve seen with Sonny is he really competes, he gives you a chance to win and we haven’t scored him any runs,” Joe Girardi said.

Gray is set to square off against Jacob deGrom, who is on track to make Tuesday’s start for the Mets after he took a line drive off the back of his upper arm on Thursday. visited the mound for the second time in two batters. The right-hander gave up two solo homers in the third inning, finishing with five hits and one walk surrendered along with five strikeouts. It was his fifth MLB start of the season and first since July 18.

He was recalled before the game with LHP Caleb Smith going back to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. His start came in place of Masahiro Tanaka, who’s on the DL with right shoulder inflammation. Michael Pineda (UCL) is out for the year and CC Sabathia (right knee) is also on the DL.
