Brain woes for diplos in Cuba attack

- Megan Cerullo

AMERICAN AND Canadian diplomats working in Cuba have been diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury and other serious conditions.

The victims were examined after U.S. officials reported that a covert sonic attack had caused several diplomats to experience a loss of hearing and other symptoms.

Those who suffered mild traumatic brain injury also likely endured damage to the central nervous system, according to CBS News, which reviewed the medical records exclusively.

More than 10 U.S. diplomats and their family members are believed to have been affected.

The diplomats first began experiencing symptoms — including hearing loss, nausea, headaches and balance disorders — late last year.

Officials are investigating whether they were targeted at their Cuban government-provided homes.

U.S. Embassy workers in Cuba have also reported vehicle vandalism, constant surveillance and home break-ins.

The incidents have caused some U.S. diplomats to cut short their stays on the island.

Earlier this month, the State Department insisted it would hold the Cuban government accountable for the alleged attacks.

“We hold the Cuban authorities responsible for finding out who is carrying out these health attacks on not just our diplomats but, as you’ve seen now, there are other cases with other diplomats involved,” Secretary of State Tillerson said.
