Safe to say, these two Gang rooks
DMarcuson’t tell Jamal Adams and Maye they’re rookies, because on the practice field they look like proven veterans, according to their teammates and Jets coaching staff. “They’re doing an outstanding job,” defensive backs coach Dennard Wilson said after Wednesday’s practice. “Talked about them before, they pick up everything easily. They don’t make a lot of mistakes. And then when they do make mistakes, they correct them. So they’ve been doing an outstanding job for us.”
After being drafted at No. 6 and No. 39, respectively, this past April, Adams and Maye have been practicing with the first-team defense throughout training camp. While most rookies need time to adjust to the speed and complex defensive schemes at the NFL level, Todd Bowles said Adams and Maye are further along than any rookie safeties he has previously coached.
“Just their maturity and ability to learn for me has been the biggest thing,” Bowles said. “How they carry themselves and how they put in the time to study.”
Linebacker Demario Davis said he has been impressed by their play as well as the way they communicate both on and off the field.
“Unbelievable, unbelievable,” Davis said. “Those guys are vocal, they don’t have a problem being vocal. They’re loud. They’re leaders by nature, and that’s what you want.”
SUSPENSION ISSUES
Bowles acknowledged that juggling preseason playing time for players with upcoming suspensions is a delicate balancing act.
