Pain forces Wright to shut down rehab & contemplate future once more:
CINCINNATI — David Wright’s rehabilitation has hit another setback. The Mets’ 34-year old third baseman shut down his rehab after experiencing shoulder pain and is heading back to New York to be examined by team doctors.
“After playing in a few games, I continued to have shoulder pain. So I decided to go to the doctor and get it checked out,” Wright said in a statement released by the team. “Will make any decisions going forward after my appointment.”
Wright played third base in two rehab games over the weekend. Sources said that after playing in the games, Wright confessed to some that he might have to switch positions to continue his comeback. Wright last played in a major league game on May 27, 2016 and since he had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his neck last June, could not get past trying to throw a ball this spring.
After beginning the season on the disabled list and working with trainers and doctors here for the first few months of the season, Wright returned to California. There, he works with Dr. Robert Watkins, who performed his surgery, and the clinic’s physical therapists.
He has struggled trying to throw in his comeback. According to sources who watched him in his rehab games that was still an issue.
The Mets now seriously have to consider their options at third base for next season. They can pick up an option on Asdrubal Cabrera, who has been a fine third baseman, but who is clearly unhappy playing there. Or they can try to sign a third baseman like Mike Moustakas, who is also an answer to their concern for power next season. That, however, will cost a lot.
Wright, who is signed through 2020, is owed $47 million over the next three seasons.
