Hopkins deal shows
FOXBOROUGH – DeAndre Hopkins’ lucrative contract extension with the Houston Texans, signed Thursday, puts into perspective just how rich Odell Beckham Jr. will become on his next deal. Hopkins, 25, signed a five-year extension for $81 million ($16.2 per year), including a whopping $49 million guaranteed. The Texans receiver has 317 catches for 4,487 yards (14.2 average) and 23 touchdowns in four NFL seasons. Beckham, who doesn’t turn 25 until Nov. 5, has 288 catches, 4,122 yards (14.3 average) and 35 touchdowns in just three seasons.
Beckham, who hasn’t practiced or played since spraining his left ankle on Aug. 21 in Cleveland, did light work on the field pregame on Thursday night but sat out, as did every healthy starter with the exception of free safety Darian Thompson. Beckham would not respond to a request for an interview after the game.
The most noteworthy player who sat out was rookie defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson, confirming he likely is set to start Week 1 in Dallas with veteran Jay Bromley hobbled by a sprained left knee. Veteran running back Shane Vereen, meanwhile, strangely received significant playing time instead of resting.
