Mauldin goes on injured reserve; Tye practices

- MANISH MEHTA

AFTER A largely disappointing first two NFL seasons, former third-round pick Lorenzo Mauldin was hoping to establish himself as a pass-rushing force for the Jets in 2017.

Instead, the outside linebacker will be sidelined for at least the first half of the year. The Jets placed Mauldin on injured reserve Monday. The 24-year-old has dealt with a lingering back issue for most of training camp. He first suffered the injury in the Green and White scrimmage on Aug. 5.

Mauldin will be eligible to return after Week 8, if he’s designated as one of the Jets’ two shortterm IR players. If Mauldin is not designated as a short-term IR player, he will miss the entire season.

The Jets re-signed inside linebacker Bruce Carter to take Mauldin’s place on the 53-man roster. The Jets had released Carter on Sunday after claiming four players off waivers.

TYE ARRIVES: Former Giants tight end Will Tye practiced with the Jets for the first time Monday, after he was claimed on waivers this weekend. He sees similarities between Ben McAdoo’s West Coast system and John Morton’s offense, and hopes to be ready to make an impact Sunday in the season opener.

“I want to play,” Tye said. “I’m going to learn everything fast. Just being the first week here, I know things are going to be fast. I’m going to be here all night, all morning. I’m going to learn it.” ... Todd Bowles plans to announce his starters at tackle and outside linebacker on Wednesday. He said it’s “possible” he will announce his backup QB on Wednesday as well. Christian Hackenberg and Bryce Petty are battling for the job.
