Shreve’s heart with hometown of Vegas

-

Chasen Shreve, a Las Vegas native, said about 10 of his friends were attending the concert where the mass shooting occurred that killed at least 58 and injured more than 500. Fortunately, none of them was hurt. “I don’t think I’ve digested it yet,” said Shreve, who added that he grew up about 30 minutes from where the event took place. “It’s just tragic. I’m just happy that everyone I know is ok.”

One of Shreve’s friends was there celebrating his birthday. Another friend wrote on Facebook that she was right next to people that got hit by the gunman. The Yankees, per team policy, would not comment on increased security measures for Tuesday’s AL wild-card game in light of the incident.

HELPING THEIR OWN CAUSE

Third-base coach Joe Espada, a native of Dorado, P.R., has had limited contact with his parents, who still live in Puerto Rico, over the last two weeks due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Maria. And it was only a 10-second voice mail from his mother a couple days ago.

Jorge Posada and his wife have raised over $400,000 to help those in need. Posada, Bernie Williams and Ivan Rodriguez were slated to fly to Puerto Rico on Monday to deliver items they also collected.

Carlos Beltran and his wife donated $1 million to the relief efforts and have raised $400,000 their own fund.

Espada plans to fly his parents to Dallas. His sister is en route to the country to get them out of there “for a couple of weeks until things get back to normal, which is going to be a while. They’re in good health, which is important.”

Said Joe Girardi: “Puerto Rico has been devastated, and I don’t want people to think that they have everything back.”

Millions are still without power and running water.

GARDY PARTY

Brett Gardner was asked if the Yankees should celebrate if they win Tuesday’s AL wild-card game or just go on to Cleveland.

“I haven’t thought too much about that, but I do plan on winning the game, and I’m sure that after the game we’ll be pretty excited to advance, and we’ll celebrate a little bit,” Gardner said. “But we’ll focus on preparing for Ervin Santana, and I know our pitchers will focus on preparing for their lineup and their guys.

“It’s going to be a good battle. It’s going to be a lot of fun. But I do think that, when we win the game, I think that we’ll be excited and be able to celebrate a little bit.”

Gardner, a leader on the Bombers, also had this good line: “It’s not necessarily the best team in the end that’s standing. It’s the team that’s playing the best at the right time. I feel like we’ve been playing good baseball, and I expect to play well.”

Aaron Judge won AL Player and Rookie of the Month while Aroldis Chapman won AL Reliever of the Month. Chance Adams, the 23-year-old righty starter, was named the organization’s prospect of the year.
