After awful loss to Dolphins, Todd says Jets must get over it quickly and prepare for Falcons

Josh McCown threw a disastrous interception with 39 seconds remaining and the game tied at 28 on Sunday in Miami. The Dolphins took over at the Jets’ 27-yard line and later kicked a gamewinning field goal in a 31-28 victory over Gang Green.

On Monday, Todd Bowles defended his decision to play for the win instead of running out the clock and heading to overtime.

“It would look no different if we ran the ball and somebody fumbled. If you get a turnover, you get a turnover,” Bowles said. “Whether it’s two minutes left or 50 seconds left, if you need three points and you got three timeouts, in a tie ball game, you go for the win. He didn’t see the guy. He made a mistake. He’ll learn from it and get better from it, and we’ll get better from it as a team. I still don’t feel any regrets about calling the plays.”

After the game, Bowles said he hadn’t seen Anderson’s helmet spike. But on Monday, after reviewing the film, the Jets coach provided a more stern rebuke of his second-year receiver.

“We don’t condone anything like that, and we don’t tolerate anything like that,” Bowles said on a conference call. “It won’t happen again.”

Bowles had a conversation with Anderson to address the penalty. was targeted eight times in 37 coverage snaps. Dolphins quarterbacks Jay Cutler and Matt Moore completed all eight of those passes for 122 yards, three touchdowns and a perfect passer rating.

Skrine was in coverage for both of Miami’s fourth-quarter touchdowns. He also committed three penalties, including two holds on the Dolphins’ tying touchdown drive.

“He had some technique errors,” Bowles said of Skrine on Monday. “It wasn’t his finest day.”

Bowles said he is not currently considering a lineup change at cornerback. Skrine is No. 2 on the Jets’ cornerback depth chart behind Morris Claiborne, but he plays in the slot when the Jets go to a nickel package.
