Free this little girl
ATrump administration whose immigration roundups have set new moral lows has just scraped the bottom of the barrel by locking up, and keeping from her mother and father, a 10-year-old girl with severe cerebral palsy. If anyone at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement cares about basic human decency, they will free Rosamaria Hernandez from a Texas detention facility and let her rejoin her family now.
Better still, President Trump will have a pang of conscience and put an end to this madness.
It is not in dispute that Rosamaria is an undocumented immigrant, as are her parents; seeking better medical care, they traveled over the southern border together when she was three months old, and settled in Laredo, Tex.
In the early morning hours this Tuesday, the girl was being transferred to a hospital for emergency gall bladder surgery when Border Patrol agents stopped the ambulance she was riding in.
Agents let Rosamaria continue to the hospital — but waited outside her room during her surgery and recovery. And then snatched her upon release.
And so, by Wednesday night, armed operatives of the federal government had spirited a frail little girl, fresh out of the operating room, 150 miles away from her parents and her home, to a detention facility in San Antonio that primarily holds children who have just come over the border.
Deportation proceedings typically take anywhere from two weeks to three months, and at this rate she’ll remain there all the while.
We repeat: Rosamaria is 10 years old. She is afraid. She suffers from a serious medical condition. She was taken directly from a hospital where she had just gotten emergency surgery.
What have we become?
