Stadium labor clash nets slash charge
COPS HAVE charged a Brooklyn man with slashing three people during a fight between nonunion and unionized workers at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in Queens.
Delroy Danvers, 65, a nonunion worker, was charged with assault for his role in the clash at about 3:20 p.m. Thursday.
The fracas began when a crew of ironworkers from Local 197 showed up to protest nonunion work at the National Tennis Center.
The union brought inflatable rats to the site to protest the hiring of nonunion workers by subcontractor U.S. Crane and Rigging to install precast panels at the tennis stadium.
Danvers allegedly pulled a pocketknife and sliced three union members.
One victim, 35, was slashed in his groin, and the blade nicked an artery, police said.
A 46-year-old man was sliced in the finger, left arm and stomach and a 49-year-old man was cut on his stomach. He refused medical attention.
Medics took the others to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Queens.
