Oh, sorry for those huge data attacks
THE FORMER heads of Yahoo and Equifax apologized on Wednesday for a pair of massive data breaches as they discussed the incidents on Capitol Hill.
Former Yahoo chief executive Marissa Mayer blamed Russia for the 2013 cyberattack that affected all 3 billion of its accounts.
“As CEO, these thefts occurred during my tenure, and I want to sincerely apologize to each and every one of our users,” she told the Senate commerce committee, testifying alongside the interim and former CEOs of Equifax Inc. and a senior Verizon Communications Inc exec.
Mayer (photo), who stepped down in June, was subpoenaed to testify after a representative declined multiple requests for her to voluntarily testimony.
A rep said Tuesday she was appearing voluntarily.
Verizon, the largest U.S. wireless operator, acquired most of Yahoo’s assets the same month Mayer stepped down. Verizon disclosed last month that the 2013 attack affected three times the amount of accounts initially reported.
Mayer told the panel that the company believes Russian hackers were responsible.
“We now know that Russian intelligence officers and state-sponsored hackers were responsible for highly complex and sophisticated attacks on Yahoo’s systems,” Mayer said.
