News weighs in on likelihood of Yanks landing Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton ... it’s complicated

Putting Big Fish Giancarlo Stanton in pinstripes sounds appealing on paper, but is it worthwhile? The News takes a look.

San Francisco and St. Louis are reportedly the favorites to land him should Jeter’s rebuilding club decide to move on from Stanton’s massive deal, which includes a full no-trade clause and a potential 2020 opt-out.

The Yankees have “turned the corner” in the words of owner Hal Steinbrenner due to their unwillingness to part with the likes of Judge, Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird and Luis Severino in recent seasons. And that quartet of highly-touted, cost-controllable young prospects has become the foundation of the franchise’s next potential run of sustained success.

So trading No. 1 overall prospect Gleyber Torres, emerging pitching prospect Justus Sheffield or 19-year-old, potential five-tool talent Estevan Florial for Stanton — given the above factors — might be excessive.

The Bombers are also going to heavily pursue the Babe Ruth of Japan, 23-year-old, two-way star Shohei Otani if he gets posted this offseason, as expected, possibly bringing another cheap, dynamic, young bat (and pitcher) to a lineup that last season ranked second in the majors in runs scored.

Stanton played in 159 games last season en route to hitting 59 homers — seven more than Judge — but he averaged just 115 games played from 2012-16 due to various ailments.

His deal could look more attractive next offseason, when Bryce Harper — with his own injury history — and Manny Machado could command upwards of $30-40 million per year.

Still, those superstars will just cost money — nothing more — and the Bombers will have plenty of it given their goal of getting under the $197 million luxury-tax threshold and getting a reset in advance of a potential 2019 spending bonanza.

If the Yankees are going to eat all or nearly all the money, the prospect cost should reflect as much. Maybe someone like Clint Frazier, who is currently blocked at the MLB level, and a couple more prospects — just not in the Torres-Sheffield-Florial tier. And then that could always change depending on how much money the debt-ridden Marlins would eat.

It is undoubtedly a complicated situation. And the Bombers are certainly wise to listen. The idea of Judge and Stanton blasting off at the bandbox in the Bronx is highly intriguing — depending on the cost.
