McDaniels failed in less than two seasons as Broncos head coach but Belichick failed in five seasons as Browns coach. The Giants QB of the future will either be Davis Webb or Sam Darnold/Josh Rosen and McDaniels is the right guy to train him. His key hire will be defensive coordinator and keeping Steve Spagnuolo would be a good decision. This is more of a wish-list entry. He’s got the perfect personality for New York. The issue is he loves living in New York and his pressure-free lifestyle. Even so, I would call him. He left the Steelers after the 2006 season and hasn’t come close to getting back into coaching. But this is the New York Football Giants. It has to be tempting. He has resisted overtures from the NFL to leave Stanford. He has great resume including nine years as an NFL assistant from 1997-2005 with the Eagles, Raiders and Ravens. He coached Andrew Luck his senior year at Stanford and there are rumors the Colts want him. He’s an offensive coach. The Giants have never had an AfricanAmerican head coach. Last weekend with Geno Smith the Giants became the last team to start a black quarterback. The Giants thought they had him in 1997 before they hired Jim Fassel. They wanted him again in 2004 before they hired Tom Coughlin, but he wasn’t home for their phone call at an appointed time and they backed off. He was just 15-17 in two years with the Dolphins between LSU and Alabama jobs. Why would he leave? He has a huge ego, he failed with the Dolphins and it’s New York. He has four games to make his case for the full-time job. Spags has already been promised he will be considered. He worked with GM candidate Dave Gettleman with the Giants in 2007-08. He has done well in two stints as Giants defensive coordinator but had a rough three years as Rams head coach (10-38) from 2009-11.
