After reeling in Marlin, what’s next for Bombers?

- — John Harper

The Yankees have made their most Yankee-like move in years, trading for Giancarlo Stanton. So what else might they have left to do as GM Brian Cashman heads for the Winter Meetings?

Because the Marlins are eating $30 million on Stanton’s contract and they also took back Starlin Castro’s remaining $23 million over the next two years, the Yankees still have some room to add payroll while getting under the $197 million luxury-tax threshold for next season.

They need starting pitching, depending how ready they believe Chance Adams is for

the big leagues, so here are possible moves they could make: 1. Bring Back CC Sabathia

Cashman said last week that he has spoken to Sabathia’s agent about a possible return, but the Yankees probably want to limit him to a one-year deal in the $10-12 million range. But the 37-year old lefty is coming off a strong season, so the question is whether he’ll want more than one year. 2. Sign Alex Cobb

The Yankees have interest in the former Rays starter, but as the third or fourth-best starter in this free-agent class, Cobb figures to command a four or five-year deal worth $16-18 million a year. That could push them to the limit of the luxury-tax threshold, perhaps leaving them without room to add players at next July’s trade deadline, which Cashman says is important. 3. Shop Outfielders For Pitching The outfield was already crowded before the Stanton trade. He may do a lot of DH-ing, but he also gives the Yankees five outfielders, and that doesn’t include Clint Frazier.

The Yankees would love to unload the remaining three years, $63 million on Jacoby Ellsbury’s contract, but they’d probably have to eat a lot of it to find a taker. Brett Gardner has one year and $13 million remaining on his contract, and could be attractive.

Cashman might also dangle Aaron Hicks or Clint Frazier, who are young and cheap enough, as well as highly-talented, to generate a lot of interest.
