Council demands fare-beating data
THE NYPD will have to hand over data on who they bust for turnstile jumping under legislation passed by the City Council on Monday.
The bill, which the mayor is expected to sign into law, requires reports every three months on arrests and summonses for fare-beating, which subway stations they happen in, and the race, gender and age of people who get caught.
Councilman Rory Lancman (D-Queens), who sponsored the bill, said the data is necessary to shed light on whether cops unfairly target black and Latino areas for enforcement.
“What we don’t know is how the NYPD is focusing its enforcement of this low-level, nonviolent offense,” he said.
