OH MO YOU DON’T!

Mehta: After latest antics, Jets should make Wilkerson rot on bench:

- MANISH MEHTA

Todd Bowles will leave Muhammad Wilkerson home where he belongs after the player’s selfishness, stupidity and unprofessionalism resurfaced for unofficially the millionth time.

Bowles announced his “coach’s decision” Friday not to play the mercurial defensive lineman against the Saints on Sunday. The self-proclaimed team leader’s penchant for tardiness to mandatory team functions bubbled to the surface yet again. Wilkerson was late for a Friday meeting, according to a person familiar with the situation, prompting Bowles to take action for the second time in as many weeks.

Wilkerson was benched for much of the first quarter against the Chiefs two weeks ago. He’s been disciplined four times in three seasons by Bowles, including an embarrassing birthday no-show that revealed that he just doesn’t get it.

“He’s gone,” a team source told the Daily News last week.

Wilkerson evidently wants to remove all doubt that he doesn’t give a damn about anyone other than himself. Maybe he’ll skip next week’s practices altogether (if the Jets actually permit him to be a part of the team). Either way, the Jets need to rid themselves of this locker room cancer after the season.

Although it’s tempting to cut the cord right now, why reward this overpaid underachiever by giving him an opportunity to sign with a playoff team in the final month of the season? The best course of action is to make Wilkerson inactive for the rest of the regular season before cutting him.

Wilkerson made everyone look like fools: His teammates, coaches and ownership. He deserves credit, however, for somehow swindling $36.75 million from the organization when the smart move all along was to make him play on the $15.7 million franchise tag in 2016 (to try to keep him motivated).

Instead, the Jets needlessly coughed up an additional $21 million on a multi-year deal that has an easy escape hatch after this season. (Wilkerson’s $16.75 million salary for 2018 doesn’t become guaranteed until the third year of the new league year in March). The Jets will free up $11 million with a $9 million dead money charge. If the team designates him as a postJune 1, they would ultimately free up $17 million (with $3 million in dead money).

Wilkerson did a masterful job fooling some people this summer into believing he could actually be a team leader before revealing his true colors. The truth is that Wilkerson has always cared most about his favorite person on One Jets Drive: Wilkerson.

His repeated rules violations reflected his lack of professionalism and leadership. He got fat after last season. He rarely showed accountability for his bone-headed decisions. Wilkerson repeatedly put his head coach and teammates in the precarious position of defending his actions.

He made a habit of letting his teammates take the fall in the wake of tough losses through the years, sneaking away as if he were above it all.

He stitched a clown suit on himself with every transgression.

He was poison disguised as a productive player for a while before his performance on the field suffered. Then, he was just a plain ol’ locker room cancer making the people, who trusted and believed in him, look like fools. e has only eight sacks in his past 31 games. His latest — and perhaps last — “sack” with the Jets looked like this: Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian tripped over his own two feet and fell to the ground. Wilkerson went over and touched him.

It was as fraudulent as they come.
