Stony Brook upsets Rutgers; ’Cuse falls

- Guard Mikal Bridges takes a shot Friday night as No. 1 ranked Villanova routs Hofstra.

Jakub Petras hit a jumper from the right elbow with .02 seconds left in overtime to give visiting Stony Brook the upset over Rutgers 75-73 on Friday night.

The Seawolves (5-8) were led by Akwasi Yeboah’s 21 points and Jaron Cornish had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Deshawn Freeman scored 18 points to lead Rutgers while Geo Baker overcame a sluggish first half to score 15.

Rutgers looked like they were going to escape with a victory in regulation before Stony Brook scored five points in the final seven seconds. Cornish would steal an inbound pass from Eugene Omoruyi and drain a 3-pointer with three seconds left to send the game to overtime, 64-64.

l Jaylen Adams scored 23 points, 21 in the first half, and St. Bonaventur­e withstood a furious Syracuse rally to win its first-ever game in the Carrier Dome in 11 tries, defeating Syracuse 60-57 in overtime.

The Bonnies (10-2) led by as many as 13 in the second half but Syracuse (10-2) closed regulation on a 15-2 run to tie the game at 53. Paschal Chukwu, a career 48 percent shooter from the foul line, tied the game on a layup and foul shot with 1:18 to go in regulation. Tyus Battle missed a potential game-winning layup with two seconds to go in regulation and Oshae Brissett missed a put-back at the buzzer.

l Mikal Bridges scored 20 points and No. 1 Villanova remained unbeaten with a 95-71 rout of Hofstra at the Nassau Coliseum.

Bridges was one of five players in double figures for Villanova (12-0).

Omari Spellman had 19 points in 31 minutes, Phil Booth finished with 17, Donte DiVincenzo had 16 and Jalen Brunson added 14 points.

l UCLA has extended the suspension­s of freshmen basketball players Jalen Hill and Cody Riley through the end of the season as a result of their admitted shopliftin­g during the team’s trip to China in November.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero and coach Steve Alford announced the decision in a joint statement released Friday. The Bruins left campus on Thursday ahead of their game against No. 7 Kentucky on AP Saturday in New Orleans.

l Joel Hernandez scored 25 points and Raiquan Clark 23 and visiting LIU Brooklyn defeated Binghamton 74-66. Hernandez was 10 of 16 from the floor, leading LIU in scoring for the sixth straight game, and had eight rebounds and four assists. Sacha Kljestan
