Gilly to Germany – Take your Nazi
GERMANY SHOULD take in the last remaining former Nazi living in the United States, said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand.
Jakiw Palij, 94, who worked as a Nazi guard at the Trawniki concentration and SS training camp in German-occupied Poland, has been living peacefully in Queens for years.
In 2003, a federal judge stripped him of his U.S. citizenship after it was discovered that he came into the country on false pretenses.
A year later, a federal judge ordered him booted to Germany, Poland or Ukraine. But those countries refuse to take him.
Last Friday, Gillibrand wrote to the German ambassador, urging him to take Palij back. “Together, the United States and Germany can show the world that Mr. Palij’s crimes have not been forgotten,” she wrote. “We can show that we have learned from the past and stand together today against anti-Semitism, bigotry, and hatred in all forms.”
