Geno: I can still be NFL starter

GENO SMITH may not have gotten much of a chance to showcase himself this season, but the Giants new third-string quarterback said he believes he can still be a starter in the NFL.

“Yeah, I think so,” he said. “Watch the tape. You’ll see it.”

Smith played in just one full game this season, throwing for 212 yards and a touchdown but fumbled twice in a 24-17 loss to the Raiders.

He was demoted earlier this week to allow rookie Davis Webb to be the backup for the Giants’ final game against Washington.

“It’s not one of those things I took personal,” he said. “I know that it has nothing to do with me, personally, so I’m not going to take it that way and that’s all I can say about that.”

Smith signed with the Giants to compete for the backup job prior to the season while recovering from ACL surgery last fall and knew what he was getting himself into, playing behind Eli Manning, but now that he is healthy he hopes to be given a chance to compete for a starting job somewhere next season.

“Yeah, not being injured helps that a lot. Not coming off ACL surgery helps that a lot and that’s something we can discuss at a later time,” he said.

Despite just playing in the one game, Smith still believes he made the right choice with the Giants and said he got a lot out of it.

“I learned a lot. Grown a lot,” he said. “That’s something that is going to continue to happen with me because I take that approach every single day I walk into the building . ... I continue to work, continue to support my teammates and be the same guy every day.”
