Brady endorses Josh for head coaching gig
John Mara want one, too?
Rosen and Darnold declared for the draft Wednesday, so the Giants should take whoever the Browns don’t. They have to draft their potential next franchise QB or they will have to hope they hit the jackpot with third-rounder Davis Webb. This is a QB league. The best coach of the staff needs to be an offensive coach. Gettleman should want McDaniels developing Darnold or Rosen. Brady was a finished product, but McDaniels did a pretty nice job with Jimmy G.
It may be a passing league, and despite the attempt to marginalize running backs in recent years, the cycle is starting to come back to dominant running backs: Zeke Elliott, Todd Gurley, Le’Veon Bell. If the Giants pass on a quarterback, they should take Penn State RB Sa- quon Barkley and put him behind an offensive line rebuilt in free agency and the draft. Come on. That’s a fastball right down Broadway. Next question.
The Falcons are the only NFC team from last year back in. The Patriots, Steelers and Chiefs are the only AFC teams. That’s four out of 12, which means a 67% turnover. The Giants were 11-5 last year and regressed by eight games. The Jaguars were 3-12 last year and won the AFC South with a 10-6 record.
That’s one of Gettleman’s favorite expressions. This is a business for tough guys. Can’t worry about hurt feelings. The idea is to win. Gettleman is old school and reminds me of George Young. If he gets the same results, Big Blue Nation will throw him a parade and he can ride in any cah he wants.
Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels could be the next head coach of the Giants, and for Tom Brady, that is just fine.
The five-time Super Bowl champion quarterback gave McDaniels a ringing endorsement for any team that wants to hire him, or Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, as its next head coach.
“I haven’t spoken to Josh about that, but I can understand obviously why people would have those guys at the top of their list,” Brady said in an interview with WEEI in Boston. “Josh has done an incredible job. He’s an incredible coach and a great friend. This is that time of year where coaches get an opportunity. A lot of coaches got fired and that means other guys will get hired. You want to take the good ones. We have some great coaches and Josh has been such a great coach for me. All those things sort themselves out. I am sure he will be focused on our team and what he needs to do to help us win just like everyone else will when the time comes.”
McDaniels, 41, is reportedly scheduled to interview with the Giants on Friday and also has interviews with the Chicago Bears and Indianapolis Colts this week while the Patriots enjoy their first-round bye.
McDaniels continues to be a hot coaching commodity despite an unsuccessful stint as Broncos head coach from 2010-11, in which he went 11-17 before being fired.
He is still recognized as one of the stronger offensive minds in the league and many believe he has learned from his mistakes from when he was a 32-year-old head coach in the NFL.
While many attribute his success as a coach to Brady, McDaniels proved in 2008 when Brady was injured that he could also run a productive offense with Matt Cassel running his system. The then-26-year-old quarterback with little experience threw for 21 touchdowns and 3,693 yards, which remains his career-best, that season.
With the Giants, McDaniels would get to work with a likely Hall of Fame quarterback in Eli Manning finishing his career while simultaneously molding his own young quarterback from the draft, or Davis Webb.
He could also end up with the Colts, where he would have Andrew Luck — if he can stay healthy — or with the Bears and their young, promising quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
