Colts LB killed by suspected drunk driver

- BY NICHOLAS PARCO

COLTS linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed early Sunday morning in Indiana after getting hit by a car that was being operated by a suspected drunken driver with a suspended license. Jackson was 26. The alleged drunken driver was in a black Ford F-150 truck and drove onto the shoulder of a road where Jackson was standing along with 54-year-old Jeffery Monroe, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Investigators believe that Monroe, who was also killed in the crash, was a ride-sharing driver and had pulled over to let Jackson out of the car because he was getting sick.

a trooper was driving through the area moments before the crash and noticed “a vehicle in front of him make an evasive maneuver to the left,” Sgt. John Perrine told The Star.

“as he slowed to stop for the crash he struck the body of the victim in the center lane,” Perrine added.

alex cabrera Gonsales, the 37-year-old driver of the Ford pickup, jumped out of his vehicle and attempted to flee but was apprehended not far from the scene. He was taken to the Marion county Jail, where blood-alcohol test results were pending.

The 6-foot, 234-pound Jackson attended Georgia Southern. He was signed by the arizona cardinals in May 2015 and released by the team about three months later. Jackson was signed to the colts practice squad in December 2015 and then by the colts to reserve/future contract in January 2016. He was placed on injured reserve last September.

The colts released a statement on Jackson’s death later on Sunday. “We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing. Edwin was loved by all in the colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths.”
