Fla. safety guy did zero

- Leonard Greene

THE SCHOOL resource officer on duty when a gunman killed 17 people at a Florida high school found a safe spot outside the building — and then did absolutely nothing, officials said Thursday.

Scot Peterson, who was the last line of defense at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas school resigned after video surfaced of him outside the school Feb. 14 when all hell was breaking loose inside, said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel.

According to Israel, Peterson, a school safety officer since 2009, remained outside the building for about four of the six minutes accused killer Nikolas Cruz, 19, was inside murdering kids with an assault rifle.

When asked what Peterson should have done, Israel did not mince words: “Went in. Address the killer. Kill the killer.”

Instead, Israel said, Peterson is seen on video doing nothing. “Never went in,” he said. “What I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of building 12, take up a position and he never went in.”

Despite being armed, video showed Peterson take a defensive position outside the freshman building where the shootings occurred and remain there during the massacre.

Israel’s office also released records Thursday of 23 calls it received since 2008 about Cruz, including one in November where a caller warned the troubled teen was gathering knives and guns and believed he could become a school shooter.

The November tip and another in February 2016 about Cruz boasting on Instagram of a school shooting were never followed up on, records show. Two other deputies were placed on restricted duty for their mishandling of the tips.
