WALKS TO BX.

Buys Gleyber some time

summer.

“They are trying to make the best team, to win is the most important thing,” Torres said. “I feel good, and if this guy helps the team, I’m happy for that. I’m just trying to be ready and help the team and do my job. I don’t know what happens right now. But I don’t control that. I just can control playing the game and staying focused on my game.”

Despite the numbers, Boone stressed that he’s seen no reason to believe Torres won’t soon deliver on the promise as one of the game’s best prospects.

“I came in here having never really seen him play in person…and obviously he’s as highly touted as just about anyone. That’s only been confirmed in my eyes and maybe even taken to another level,” Boone said. “There’s no question to me the player he is and is gonna be… It’s a matter of time. He’s a really, really talented player.”

At 32, Walker has been a productive hitter with power potential from both sides of the plate when healthy in recent seasons.

Before moving him to Milwaukee in August, the salary-dumping Mets believed they previously had a deal to send the former Silver Slugger winner to the Bronx. But the trade was nixed, with the Yankees reportedly claiming they had issues with the second baseman’s medical records, while the Mets charged their local rivals with using that as an excuse to back out of the deal.

Walker underwent season-ending back surgery in 2016, but he batted .265 @BrianHoch with 14 home runs and 49 RBI in 111 games with the Mets and Brewers last season.

“We value his abilities, we think he’s a professional hitter. We feel he can cover us at third, second or first (base),” Cashman said. “Obviously, we like what’s going on in camp currently, and he has about two weeks to go for us to get him finished off and ready…It certainly wasn’t part of our game plan at first, but it was something we couldn’t ignore when the opportunity still existed.”

Walker acknowledged he’d thought the Bronx opportunity had passed once Drury — who can play either second or third — was scooped up from Arizona on Feb. 20.

“Yeah, I did. We kind of went down different avenues of what else what could potentially be out there and fortunately things circled back,” Walker said. “This is a great opportunity and I’m excited about what’s in front of us.”

That future still includes Torres, but Walker provides an invaluable stop-gap in the interim.

“All I can tell you is we see something that makes sense, we’ll get aggressive on it,” Cashman said. “Even despite the Drury addition, along with all the players we’re excited about having, it still made too much sense not to complete something here. It protects us and it improves us.”
