28th Annual Latino College Expo & Leadership Summit

-

The Latino College Expo (LCE) is your gateway to meeting admissions representatives from over 75 public and private colleges, universities and community based organizations to share valuable information about their institutions. Founded in 1990, LCE's mission has been to "elevate the educational aspirations of the Latino community and all youth."

Inspired by working as a former admissions director, Antonio Aponte saw that too many Latino parents were not well versed in navigating the college process, which in turn affected their role as partners during this important time of decisions. He co-founded the Latino College Expo to serve the needs of this budding community. As Executive Director, Mr. Aponte has ensured the growth of this event throughout the years, making it a one-of-a-kind experience.

What makes this event so unique and groundbreaking is the focus on building a stronger partnership between a student and his/her parents, guardians and counselors. When those partnerships are realized and strengthened, the daunting process of finding and affording college will be minimized and the outcome will be maximized. In addition, the college prep seminars prior to, and during, the Expo are offered to hear information, engage in discussions and gain awareness on various topics that will help prepare you for the college search process.

The Latino College Expo has expanded to include a Leadership Summit to create a community of learning, sharing, mentorship, and best practices for students, families and educators. LCE was fortunate to add the expertise of Ms. Damaris Mercado as the Director of Programming. She is the proud parent of two young men who’ve attended the Expo, have gone through college prep and application processes, who now serve as panelists to share their experiences with high school students and their families. Ms. Mercado has brought many ideas, speakers, panelists, moderators, counselors and performers together to serve the organization in order to help facilitate information sessions, workshops and seminars on the various aspects of college access and success.

Recognizing the requests and need for more support around financing education, seminars this year will cover a bit of information and guidance around the filing of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and the CSS Profile. These forms are crucial to maximize the amount of financial aid possible through grants and scholarships on national, state and private levels. The ever popular sessions: “The College Experience” conducted with current students and recent grads, and “Admissions Basics & Key Things To Know" with representatives from CUNY’s, SUNY’s and private colleges, as well as “Choosing A Major & Life After College” with professionals from various fields will also be offered.

A special addition this year is the “Ask the Counselor” table where college access counselors will be on hand during the fair to answer questions and offer guidance on the application process, what schools might be good matches based on interests, grades, finances, and extra curricular activities.
