Normalcy, Trump-style

-

Friday, after many months of negotiations, Republicans and Democrats in Congress reached consensus on and President Trump signed an omnibus spending bill that included compromises by both sides. If you squinted, it almost seemed normal. It wasn’t close to normal.

Two nights before, Trump had tweeted his support of the bill — lauding record military spending, which he likes, and a downpayment on funding the southern border wall that he promised and promised and promised Mexico would pay for.

“The President supports the bill, looks forward to signing it,” said Trump’s budget director.

Then came Friday morning’s whiplash — when Trump threw Washington into a tizzy by saying he was “considering a VETO,” suddenly furious that there wasn’t enough money for the wall, and doubly angry that the so-called Dreamers didn’t get the legal status they’ve been waiting for.

Remember, it was Trump who pulled the rug out from under Dreamers in the first place, and it was Trump who gleefully sabotaged a bipartisan legislative deal to fix the problem.

One other little thing: Roughly a week ago, livid at New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, Trump, flailing fists with fury, threatened to veto the entire deal if it included a cent to help dig a new rail tunnel under the Hudson River.

Don’t you know it, the final legislation included funding for critical infrastructure needs, which will likely mean money for that vital project.

When it came time to sign the bill, Trump pitched a fit. But he signed the bill.
