Blaz not buying gov NYCHA fix

- Greg B. Smith

MAYOR de Blasio remained deeply skeptical Thursday about Gov. Cuomo’s emergency order turning control of NYCHA’s repair work over to an independent monitor.

Touting the recent completion of city-funded roof work at the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, the mayor worried that the monitor would actually slow down much-needed upgrades of aging housing authority buildings.

“We still have to find out what it really means,” he said at a press conference held on a newly upgraded roof at the Queens housing complex. “Maybe there’s something there that could help us. Maybe there’s something in it that will slow us down.”

De Blasio called the order “thrown together” and “some kind of hybrid like nothing we’ve seen.” His aides say Corporation Counsel Zachary Carter is now involved in deciding how the city will respond to it.

The order, signed Monday by Cuomo at an event that excluded the mayor, bars NYCHA from involvement in the spending of $550 million from the state and any unspent city funds steered toward NYCHA repairs going forward.

The mayor, City Council and a group of tenant leadershave 60 days to choose the monitor, who then gets 30 days to hire a construction manager.

De Blasio admitted Thursday he has not yet talked with the Council or the tenants to begin the selection process.
