Remembering the legend Rusty
Middle Village: Kudos to the Daily News for its excellent coverage of the passing of a true New York City hero, Rusty Staub (“There IS crying in baseball,” March 30). The great cover, five pages, Bill Madden’s heartfelt comments and top 10 moments of Rusty’s Met career brought back a lot of memories. I was lucky enough to have been at four of those moments. Besides being an All-Star on the baseball field, his work off the field was even better. To raise the amount of money that he did through his foundation to help New York City police and firefighter widows and children along with feeding the hungry was just tremendous on his part.
Perhaps with all the great work he did, there can be a memorial service for him one day at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. So yes, there was crying in baseball upon hearing the news of the passing of a great player and humanitarian. John Lynch
Keep on fighting
Bronx: I feel so proud of our high school students, fighting without violence for their protection. So what has happened? Nothing. I have not heard of metal detectors or guards placed in any schools. To all students: Do not stop protesting in an orderly fashion. Use your voice, and keep fighting for your safety as well as the safety of all schools. President Trump shocked me. He has a child and wants him protected. So what are you going to do for our children? All the students who spoke are intelligent and articulate. If you keep pursuing this issue you will achieve the protection you so deserve. After the last shooting of 17 students and school staff, I never want to cry that much again. Wake up, President Trump. Lord over landlords
Elmhurst: City Council members Ritchie Torres and Carlina Rivera recommend in their Op-Ed creation an Office of the Tenant Advocate (“Kushner’s just the tip of the iceberg,” March 22). That’s fine, but much more must be done. One major reform would be for the state attorney general and New York City Department of Investigation to set up a permanent prosecutorial Joint Task Force on Tenant Protection. This came into embryonic form during the probe of now-imprisoned Manhattan landlord Steve Croman. The time has come to make the task force permanent and to drastically expand it.

Suffern, N.Y.: Re “Why good Christians must disavow Trump” (Op-Ed, April 1): I remember during the Reagan 80s, when both evangelicals and Catholics supported a President who was an idiot babbling in delirium, who lectured people on morality while never attending church himself. I remember John Cardinal O’Connor campaigning from the pulpit for Reagan, and evangelicals trying to create a Christian fundamentalist version of Iran with Reagan as its figurehead. I remember the televangelist sex scandals, and Jerry Falwell’s unclean alliance with the blasphemous Unification Church. I remember the Iran-Contra scandal, and how the religious right defended it because it was committed by their precious Ronald Reagan. What’s a little bit of Donald Trump after all that?

They let a puppy die
Yonkers: Everyone on that ill-fated plane must have been brain dead, to sit comfortably in their seats, listening to the barking and whimpering puppy gasping for air in that pitch-dark, airless hole above the seats. I only feel sorry for that poor little girl, not the mother. That child went through horror. As for the stewardess, well, I can’t put down on paper what I wish her for the rest of her life. Sadly, even that cannot erase what happened or bring back that little animal.
