‘Racer’ reaches 106 — with no finish in sight
AIN’T SHE sweet.
Goldie Sohn, the oldest member of the New York Road Runners, celebrated her 106th birthday Wednesday with a rendition of the classic Roaring 20s tune — to the delight of friends and family.
“Ain’t she sweet, coming down the street,” Sohn belted out in front of seniors at the Services for Older Adults Family Health Center at NYU Langone in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
“We’ll see her walking down that street,” she continued. “Yes I ask you very confidentially, ain't she sweet?”
Sohn smiled and clapped as she sat under a big silver balloon emblazoned with “106” during the celebration in the center’s community room.
“Happy birthday to me,” she said. “Imagine that. One-hundred-and-six, wow!”
Sohn was born in 1912, the year the Titanic sank, her daughter, Marilyn Fisher, noted.
“She was born premature at seven months,” said Fisher, 78, adding the family relied on a home remedy to sustain her. “My grandmother kept her alive in a shoe box filled with cotton, salt and olive oil. Now the miracle is that she’s 106.”
Sohn suffers from glaucoma and mild dementia, but it doesn’t stop her from joining her friends at the center four times a week for a series of light stretches, shoulder rolls, knee bends and air punches, Fisher added.
Sohn attributes her long life to music, exercise and friends.
“Don’t sit still,” she said. “You have to be happy.”
Sohn is already a senior celebrity: The Daily News highlighted her birthday celebration last year, as well.
