Nadal rolls in Monaco

-

Rafael Nadal won a record 31st Masters title, beating Kei Nishikori of Japan, 6-3, 6-2, in the Monte Carlo Masters final on clay on Sunday. Nadal also became the first male tennis player in the Open era to win the same title 11 times — 13 years after his first title in Monaco. It gave him a 76th title overall and ensured the Spaniard keeps his top ranking ahead of Roger Federer.

Nishikori took 11 minutes to hold for 1-1. He did break Nadal with a superb passing shot at full stretch to lead 2-1, but meekly surrendered the next four games. Nadal won on his first match point with a stinging backhand winner.

Madison Keys beat Pauline Parmentier of host France, 7-6 (4), 6-4 to send the United States into a second straight Fed Cup final. Keys gave the defending champions an unassailable 3-1 lead in Aix-enProvence.

Keys, a late replacement for CoCo Vandeweghe, came back from a 4-1 deficit in the first set and made the decisive break in the ninth game of the second set with two consecutive winners.

The U.S. plays the Czech Republic, which beat Germany 4-1 in Stuttgart, in the final. Earlier, Sloane Stephens had given a 2-1 lead to the U.S. with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kristina Mladenovic.

LANDRY TAKES TEXAS OPEN

Andrew Landry won the Valero Texas Open in San Antonio for his first PGA Tour victory, pulling away with early birdies and holding on with par saves. The 30-year-old Texan parred the final seven holes for a 4-under 68 and a two-stroke victory over Trey Mullinax (69) and Sean O’Hair (66). Landry finished at 17-under 271.

Tied for the third-round lead with Zach Johnson, Landry birdied the first three holes and added two more on Nos. 6 and 10.

Moriya Jutanugarn won the HUGEL-JTBC LA Open by two shots for her first victory in six years on the LPGA Tour, joining sister Ariya as the second siblings to win on the tour.

The 23-year-old from Thailand shot a 3-under 68 for a 12-under 272 total Sunday at Wilshire CC in the tour’s return to Los Angeles after a 13-year absence. Jutanugarn won in her 156th start after three career runner-up finishes.

Seven-time winner Ariya tied for 24th after a 70. Hall of Famer Inbee Park shot a 68 to tie for second with Jin Young Ko (70).
