4 young lives cut short by an act of evil

- BY ELIZABETH ELIZALDE Taurean Sanderlin

AMONG THEfour young people killed when a partially naked gunman opened fire at a Waffle House in Nashville early Sunday were a restaurant employee, a musician and a college student.

Travis Reinking, 29, pulled up to the eatery in his pickup truck and waited several minutes before fatally shooting Taurean Sanderlin, a Waffle House employee, and customer Joe Perez, 20, with his AR-15 rifle outside the restaurant, authorities said.

Inside, he gunned down 21-year-old DeEbony Groves and 23-year-old Akilah Dasilva, who later died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Hero James Shaw, 29, managed to rush Reinking when he paused to reload and throw the weapon over the counter before the shooter fled the scene, police said.

Shaw said he heard Sanderlin say he was going to take a break before he went outside, according to the Tennessean.

Sanderlin worked for the Waffle House franchise for about five years, Waffle House CEO Walt Ehmer said.

Dasilva was a local musician who went by the nickname “Natrix.”

Shaundelle Brooks, Dasilva’s mother, told News Channel 5 his name means “the intelligent one” and that he was passionate about his music.

Friends described him as a quiet and kind person, but once he got on stage he was “very energetic.”

“He was talented, loved music,” local artist and friend, Gifted Queen, told News Channel 5. “I can’t believe it.”

She said she and Dasilva have performed together and were preparing for upcoming shows. He helped his community by making music videos, she said.

Dasilva was at the Waffle House with his brother and girlfriend, 21-year-old Shanita Waggoner, who was also wounded and hospitalized, according to the station.

Groves was a senior studying social work at Belmont University in Nashville. She was remembered for being a bright student and an excellent basketball player.

“She was a brilliant young lady, very intelligent and a very hard worker,” said Gallatin High School coach Kim Kendrick, according to The Tennessean.

“She was one of three seniors on her team, and she was a great role model for the other players because of her hard work and dedication to her studies and to her school.”

Groves was also a member of the Tau Nu Delta Sigma Theta sorority.

Her fellow sorority sister from another university, 24-year-old Sharita Henderson, was wounded during the shooting and taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

One social media user, @ChiomaMelan, said she was trying to move beyond her anger after Groves’ death.

“A piece of s--t walked into Waffle House today and took the lives of 4 people. One was my sister. I have so much anger in my heart right now,” she wrote on Twitter. “But I want y’all to see the beautiful face of the woman that was taken from us today! Baby girl I love you so much. I’m so sorry.”
