Bail out your loved ones online

- BY JAMES FANELLI

THE CITY’S bail system is finally joining the 21st century.

Mayor de Blasio announced Friday that the city will launch an online bail system to make it easier for people to get out of jail.

“Until we see the necessary bail reform that will make the system more just and speed up the closure of Rikers Island, New York City will do everything in its power to make the system as efficient and fair as possible,” the mayor said.

“People should not be in jail based on the size of their bank account and no one should stay in jail because a family member was unable to get a day off from work to go to court or a correctional facility.”

The announcement of the system upgrade came a day after the Daily News reported that Rikers Island was a virtual dinosaur because it relied on a fax machine to receive payment details on bail postings.

The News reported that a broken fax left several detainees stranded behind bars Thursday because the paperwork couldn’t be transmitted.

Critics said that was one more example of broken bail system in need of drastic reform.

Under the system announced Friday, loved ones can go online and post bail with a credit card. The city will also install kiosks in courthouses and in all the boroughs that will provide access to the website. The city’s online bail system was touted more than a year ago but it was delayed due to technical problems.
