Cynthia Nixon wants to be governor. She’s made speeches, held rallies, collected donations — and unleashed no shortage of attacks on the incumbent, Andrew Cuomo. But there’s something that Nixon hasn’t done yet: released her income tax returns. The public has a right to know about a candidate’s financial status and entanglements, including what loopholes if any she relies upon. That’s why tax disclosure has long been a bipartisan routine, with the notable exception of that man in the White House. It’s especially important when a candidate, a private citizen, has largely been immune from conflict-of-interest reporting.

Monday, after the Daily News’ Ken Lovett had asked and asked and asked, Nixon (who had gotten an extension) said she will file this week and put out her 1040s. Good; in the interest of transparency, the public should see a few years’ worth.

All of this also goes for GOP nominee Marc Molinaro, the Dutchess County executive. Put out the returns and get on with the campaigning.
