Gunning for common sense

-

n contrasting styles of keeping the public safe and standing up to the National Rifle Association, the President of the United States abjectly fails, while New York’s governor steps up.

In Dallas Friday, President Trump addressed the NRA convention as its de facto leader, standing by the group that supported his 2016 campaign to the tune of $30 million. See him repay that debt. No shooting obscenity — not 58 murdered in Las Vegas, nor 26 slain in Texas, nor 17 cut down in Parkland — deters Trump from NRA fealty.

And so, the President, who for a moment there in the wake of tragedy dared buck the gun-lobby line, reverted to the mindless mean.

Forget common-sense gun reform because people get stabbed in London, he said. Forget common-sense gun reform because a van killed people here in New York (even though no one objects to vehicles being licensed and registered).

More people with more guns is the answer to gun madness, he said, failing to mention the Waffle House hero who disarmed an AR-15-wielding murderer barehandedly.

Be proud, New Yorkers, that some sanity reigns here. On Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo signed legislation blocking gun purchases from those convicted of domestic violence. He also wants to extend the waiting period (from three to 10 days) for those not passing the instant background check on gun purchases.

No coincidence, gun deaths in our city and state, which have dropped steadily over the decades, keep declining. It’s a fact a lifelong New Yorker named Trump would notice and celebrate — if only he weren’t blinded by the right.
