gun, the weapon used in this horrible shooting at 18,” Trump continued, referring to the legally purchased AR-15 assault rifle Nikolas Cruz, 19, is accused of having used to kill his former classmates and teachers.

Trump’s rebuke of his own party encouraged Democrats, who called on him to act.

But in a stunning reversal, Trump backed off his promise days later, instead endorsing legislation to arm teachers — a contentious proposal touted by the NRA. As to bumping the sales age for rifles, Trump tweeted, “watching court cases and ruling before acting…but not much political support.”

Survivors of the Parkland shooting were struck by an unsettling sensation of deja vu Friday.

“Our children are being MURDERED and you’re treating this like a game,” Stoneman Douglas student Jaclyn Corin tweeted at Trump. “DO SOMETHING.”

In Washington, D.C., about a half-dozen high schools staged a die-in outside House Speaker Paul Ryan’s office to protest his inaction on the issue.

Earlier this month, Trump’s claim of Republicans being “afraid” of the NRA seemed long forgotten as he headlined the gun group’s annual convention in Dallas. “Your Second Amendment rights are under siege, but they will never ever be under siege as long as I am your President,” Trump told the crowd.

Another promise Trump made but failed to act on came after Stephen Paddock shot 58 people to death in Las Vegas last October.

After it was revealed that Paddock had used so-called bump stocks to carry out his bloodcurdling assault, Trump promised to move quickly toward outlawing the weapons accessory, which can make semiautomatic rifles fire like automatic ones.
