Red Bulls win 4th in row on Wright-Phillips’ pair

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored two second-half goals in the Red Bulls’ 3-1 victory over host Atlanta United on Sunday night. The Red Bulls (7-3-0) have won four in a row, outscoring opponents 12-4 during that span.

Wright-Phillips headed home Michael Murillo’s cross to the center of the box to give the Red Bulls a 2-1 lead in the 51st minute. About four minutes later, WrightPhil­lips capped the scoring with a header, off an entry from Alejandro Romero Gamarra, that banged in off the crossbar.

Allie Quigley scored 15 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the host Chicago Sky beat the Liberty, 80-76, in the WNBA opener for the Libs.

Trailing 68-64 with six minutes left, the Liberty trimmed its deficit to one point on four occasions, the last when Tina Charles’ jumper made it 74-73 with three minutes to go. Charles led the Libs with 19 points, rookie Kia Nurse added 17 and Amanda Zahui B scored 15.

Rookie Aaron Wise cruised to his first PGA Tour victory, shattering the AT&T Byron Nelson record at 23 under on a new course in Dallas in a race to finish before nightfall after a four-hour rain delay. The 21-year-old shot a 6-under 65 to beat Marc Leishman (68) by three strokes.

GRID GREAT CANNON DIES

Billy Cannon, the gifted running back who won the Heisman Trophy for LSU in 1959 with a memorable Halloween night punt return touchdown against Mississipp­i, died Sunday. He was 80. LSU said Cannon, the school’s only Heisman winner, died at his home in St. Francisvil­le, La. The cause of death was not known. Cannon led the Tigers to a national title in 1958 and won the Heisman the following year, highlighte­d by his tacklebrea­king 89-yard punt return that beat Ole Miss 7-3.

NADAL CONQUERS ROME

Top-seeded Rafael Nadal beat defending champ and second seed Alexander Zverev 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to win a record-extending eighth Italian Open title on clay in Rome.

BRAVES WIN ON 6 IN 9TH

Dansby Swanson’s two-run single capped a six-run ninth inning, and the NLleading Braves rallied to stun the visiting Marlins 10-9. Atlanta has won nine of its last 12. Miami led 6-0 after four innings and 9-4 to begin the ninth.

l Shohei Ohtani struck out nine while throwing 72/3 innings of six-hit ball in his seventh career start, and the Angels snapped their five-game skid with a 5-2 victory over the visiting Rays.
