YANKS SPLIT TWIN BILL WITH DETROIT:

Judge fans 8 times in twin bill split against Tigers

-

DETROIT — Aaron Judge went 0-for-2 on Monday — as in 0-for-two games. Judge struck out a combined eight times in nine at-bats in the Yankees’ doubleheader against the Tigers — including five times in their 4-2 loss in Game 2 at Comerica Park, which snapped a five-game winning streak. Judge’s eight strikeouts were the most in a doubleheader since strikeouts for hitters were first recorded in 1910 for the NL and 1913 in the AL, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. It was also Judge’s first career Platinum Sombrero.

“Not just a rough day, a terrible day,” Judge said. “But that’s the beauty of baseball, I get to wake up and get some fresh at-bats tomorrow. Just get ready. That’s all you can do.”

Tensions escalated in the third inning of Game 2 when Mike Fiers hit Giancarlo Stanton in the left elbow. The two, of course, have a history, as Fiers hit Stanton in the face in September 2014, ending his season. So Stanton wasn’t happy. He barked at Fiers, and Fiers barked back. At one point Stanton looked as though he was going to head toward the mound, but Tigers catcher James McCann stood in front of him. Eventually, Stanton walked to first. Stanton exacted revenge in the sixth, blasting a hanging breaking ball from Fiers 456 feet for his 13th homer of the year. Stanton emphatically flipped his bat and later pointed at Fiers when he crossed the plate.

Domingo German allowed four runs in 6.2 innings. German was hurt by a passed ball by Gary Sanchez and a misplay in left by Clint Frazier. Sanchez leads the majors in passed balls with nine.

Adam Warren struggled in his return from the disabled list, allowing an RBI double to Victor Martinez and walking a pair.
