Help me & I’ll pay up: Blaz
MAYOR DE BLASIO will pay the $300,000 he owes his attorneys, he promised Tuesday — as soon as the City Council passes a law allowing him to ask others to help him pay the bill.
Hizzoner owes the debt to Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP for its work defending him during investigations into his political activity. While he has owed the money for at least a year, according to financial disclosure forms, he said he was unaware of any interest being charged or time line set for repayment.
“I have to pay it back and I will pay it back,” de Blasio said during an unrelated news conference at Police Headquarters. “I don’t know their specific terms and conditions about time lines, but we’ve all been very clear with each other, it has to be paid back.”
But there’s a catch — the Council has to pass a bill allowing him to set up a legal defense fund, so he can raise money from others to settle the bill.
Asked whether a law firm would extend a similar $300,000 courtesy to someone who wasn’t an elected official trying to create a legal defense fund, de Blasio said he didn’t find his situation unusual.
“I think there’s been legal defense funds for generations, and it’s understood that many people don’t have the resources readily available to pay these kind of bills right away,” he said.
